Arrested
for journalism.
On April 6, 2011, Syrian security agents arrested me at an internet café near Damascus after I had reported on the protests unfolding across the country.
I was taken to an undisclosed location and held for more than six weeks. International press-freedom and human-rights organizations called for my release while the story of my detention traveled beyond Syria.
I was released on bail on May 30, 2011. The experience did not end my relationship with journalism. It made the stakes of reporting—and the responsibility to protect those who do it—impossible to ignore.
